Background
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Egypt, Abdel Aziz Konsowa, had a meeting with Bournemouth University Vice-Chancellor and CEO Alison Honour at the beginning of May at the Ministry’s premises in Egypt’s New Capital City. The conversation focused on the development of scientific cooperation between Egypt and the UK.
Some topics were addressed: medicine, technologies, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and possibilities of joint educational programmes. Moreover, cross-border education and mutual sharing of knowledge and experience were mentioned during the discussion.
An important point raised by both sides was the possibility of opening the Bournemouth University campus in Egypt. It is perceived by the two sides as an important step in securing Egypt’s position as a regional hub for higher education.
Konsowa pointed to the strength of Egypt-UK relations and underlined his country’s drive to build stronger university partnerships. He walked through recent gains in Egypt’s education sector, more universities, dual-degree options, and nine active foreign university branches that allow students to earn globally recognised degrees at home.
Honour welcomed Egypt’s educational progress and said Bournemouth University stands ready to deepen its engagement with Egyptian institutions. She shared that the university holds the 41st spot in the UK on the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings and sits within the global top 500.
She also noted that the university draws nearly 17,000 students from more than 120 countries and runs over 140 programmes across faculties in business and law, health and environmental sciences, medicine, media, science, and technology.
