Background :
The latest international ranking ranks Canada as one of the top five nations in terms of research and higher education, coming after the UK, the Netherlands, the USA, and Sweden.
According to the ranking published in the 2026 MeasuresHE Report, which is a data analytics company focused on educational institutions, Canada received an overall ranking score of 87.8/100 among nations. Canada scored highest in academic integrity, where it tied for first place with a perfect score of 100, and in global standing at 94.8. Lower scores in openness (77.3) and sustainability (84) pulled its overall ranking down.
Canada performed better than America in research, international integration, and academic integrity. However, American institutions scored higher in sustainability, openness, global standing, demographics and investment. Canada’s research score stood at 89.4, the most heavily weighted of the seven pillars used in the rankings.
The report arrives as growing numbers of American academics consider relocating to Canada. A researcher who recently made the move said academic freedom is the primary reason, noting that while Canadian salaries are lower and workloads are heavier, Canada offers freedom of speech, academic freedom, and democratic stability.
Canada’s federal government is actively capitalising on this trend through its Impact+ Research Chairs program, which offers funding, scholarships, and partnerships to attract leading international researchers. The program targets key sectors including digital technology, health, clean energy, food security, and defence.
The University of Toronto and McGill University represent Canada’s top-ranked institutions, holding the leading positions in both the Times Higher Education and QS global university rankings for 2026.
