Background

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) will open its Bengaluru campus at Manyata Tech Park by August 2026, bringing global education closer to Indian students.

The Australian university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Karnataka government to formalise the plan. The signing ceremony was attended by Minister for Large and Medium Industries M B Patil and Higher Education Minister M C Sudhakar. UNSW Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs and Industries Department Principal Secretary Dr S Selvakumar exchanged the agreement.

The Bengaluru campus will initially offer undergraduate programmes in commerce, media, computer science, and data science. It will also launch a postgraduate course in cybersecurity. Officials said the academic council of UNSW will directly oversee the new campus, and students will study the same curriculum as those enrolled in Australia.

Patil said the location at Manyata Tech Park will give students direct exposure to industry, with several leading technology companies operating in the area. He added that the university also plans to set up another campus at the upcoming Knowledge, Wellbeing and Innovation City near Bengaluru.

The move comes as India and Australia continue their education and research cooperation programme for 2025–30. UNSW already works closely with Indian institutions such as IIM Bengaluru, IISc, the National Law University, and several government departments.

Sudhakar said UNSW is known across the Asia-Pacific region for strong graduate employability and that its Bengaluru campus will further boost the city’s innovation ecosystem. He said the development will encourage more global universities to invest in Bengaluru.

Officials expect the new campus to strengthen the city’s position as an education and technology hub. It will give Indian students access to an international learning environment while allowing them to remain in the country.

With the expansion, UNSW will strengthen academic and industry connections between India and Australia and provide high-quality education to more students in Indian cities.
