Background

DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology) will launch the AI/SW School in March 2026 to train the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) and software (SW) experts. The new school aims to help students in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions gain a world-class education and prepare for future industries.

Located near Dongdaegu Station for easy access, it will welcome students from 6th to 10th grade. Instead of using grades, it will put students in classes based on their skills, not their age.

The program will include five learning stages: basic, intermediate, advanced, mentorship, and master. First-year‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ courses will mainly cover AI and software basics, such as Python, along with DGIST research areas. In later stages, students will take part in advanced projects such as medical and physical computing. From 2027, they will also join mentorship and research programs with DGIST professors and graduate students.

DGIST will offer special programs for high school students, including AI, robotics, cognitive science, and business basics. Students will also have chances to join international exchange and internship programs.

President Lee Kunwoo said DGIST will share its top research and resources to support local students and strengthen Korea’s global competitiveness. Director Seok Changwon added that the school will focus on hands-on learning and creative problem-solving to develop skilled and independent young innovators.

DGIST is committed to developing the AI/SW School into a prominent core hub for education, research, and start-up activities in the local ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌community.
