Background
Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding international partnerships in higher education and research as part of its broader strategy to strengthen national development through talent growth, innovation, and scientific advancement.
The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology said it remains open to working with global educational institutions to improve domestic capacity in research, innovation, and workforce development. The statement came during the 5th Education Investment Forum held in Jakarta in the second week of April.
Director General of Research and Development Fauzan Adziman said international cooperation should move beyond improving access to education and instead focus on building long-term strategic partnerships that support Indonesia’s national development goals.
He stated that broader international engagement forms part of the ministry’s effort to transform the country’s learning system and strengthen its research ecosystem. According to him, successful partnerships must be built on a clear understanding of development gaps to ensure they remain effective, sustainable, and beneficial for all parties involved.
The ministry further indicated that it still endorses the flexible partnership frameworks, such as joint research initiatives and joint academic curricula in line with national priorities. These frameworks aim to improve coordination between Indonesian institutions and overseas partners.
Officials added that targeted and sustainable collaboration will play a major role in increasing the contribution of education and research to the country’s long-term economic and social development.
The 5th Education Investment Forum, themed Funding the Future of Learning, brought together government officials and international institutions to exchange views on building stronger partnerships in Indonesia. Another theme that was discussed by participants was the adjustment of cooperation models and the enhancement of cooperation with local institutions.
