Canadian Centre for Elder Law Relocates to TRU Faculty of Law

Prime Highlights:

The Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL) is moving to the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Faculty of Law as part of a new memorandum of understanding between TRU and the BC Law Institute (BCLI).

The CCEL, which has operated under BCLI since 2003, will continue its important work on elder law research and legal education at TRU.

Key Background:

The Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL) is relocating to the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Faculty of Law, a move announced jointly by the BC Law Institute (BCLI) and TRU.  This transition follows a revised memorandum of understanding that formalizes the partnership between the two institutions.

As part of the agreement, TRU’s Law Library will become the new home for all CCEL publications, including key resources such as the Practical Guide to Elder Abuse and Neglect Law in Canada. The CCEL, which has been an integral division of the BCLI since its inception in 2003, has played a pivotal role in advancing research on elder law. Over the years, it has produced more than 30 publications and provided essential legal information and educational tools to numerous community organizations dedicated to aging-related issues.

Ed Wilson, board chair of BCLI, expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “We are pleased that the TRU Faculty of Law will be continuing the CCEL’s important work. BCLI is proud of the CCEL’s accomplishments to date, and there is still much more to do.” He emphasized the critical need for innovative legal solutions to address the diverse challenges faced by aging populations.

Daleen Millard, dean of TRU’s Faculty of Law, also highlighted the significance of this transition. “Hosting the CCEL is a wonderful opportunity for the TRU Faculty of Law to deepen our research and commitment to excellence in this area,” Millard said. The BCLI, a non-profit law reform agency based in British Columbia, remains dedicated to advancing elder law reform and will continue its collaboration with TRU’s Faculty of Law on related projects. The institutions collectively acknowledged the contributions of all past CCEL staff in developing vital resources for the elder law sector.
