Background
Arizona State University hosted senior members of OpenAI’s education and health teams last week as part of an ongoing strategic partnership aimed at expanding the use of artificial intelligence in higher education. During the three-day campus visit, participants shared practical knowledge and explored new ways to use ChatGPT Edu in teaching, learning, and research.
ASU Enterprise Technology held workshops and interactive sessions that brought together faculty, students, and staff. During the sessions, participants shared their experience in building custom AI tools, using AI in everyday academic work, and created agent-based AI systems to help with learning and decision-making.
The visit builds on ASU’s flagship collaboration with OpenAI. ASU has worked with OpenAI since 2024. Since then, the university has completed nearly 700 projects through its AI Innovation Challenge, using AI in academics and daily operations.
As part of the campus program, OpenAI hosted in-depth workshops on ChatGPT Education for more than 80 students. The company also offered an early preview of its new OpenAI Certifications. ASU will test these certifications and provide feedback to help shape their future development.
ChatGPT Edu is currently available at no cost to all ASU faculty, staff, and students, as of October 2025. The education-focused version is designed to support secure and flexible use in classrooms and project-based learning, without usage limits that could slow experimentation.
Teams from ASU’s Learning Enterprise and ASU Health divisions also joined. They are creating AI tools to help students learn better and stay healthier, showing how AI can boost both academic success and wellbeing.
ASU and OpenAI are working together to use AI tools responsibly and help students get ready for an AI-driven future.
