Background

Gabon has taken an important step to modernize its education system with the launch of the pilot phase of the “Connected School” programme. The Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation introduced the project on 3 December 2025, working closely with partners Huawei and Moov Africa–Gabon Télécom. The initiative supports President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s goal of using digital technology to reduce gaps in education and offer better opportunities to young people.

The pilot is now running in Léon Mba High School in Libreville and the Public High School of Oyem. Both schools have received modern smart screens, high-quality audiovisual tools, a secure digital platform, and fast internet access. These upgrades allow students in Oyem to join classes that are taught live in Libreville. They can interact with teachers, ask questions, and take part in classroom activities in real time.

The new system lets students access interactive digital content, live lessons, Q&A sessions, and class recordings for later review. Teachers and students can use these digital resources to improve lessons and make learning more engaging.

The first successful connection between the two schools is seen as a major achievement and a step toward building a national network of connected classrooms. The government plans to expand the programme to more schools in the coming years.

With the ‘Connected School’ initiative, Gabon wants to give all students equal access to quality education, improve teaching standards, and prepare them for a fast-changing digital world. The project shows the country’s commitment to using technology to drive human development.
