Background

Exam preparation app SimpleStudy has announced plans to host the world’s first fully synchronized digital mock exams for GCSE and A-Level students across the UK and Ireland.

The company said students using the app will gain access to subject-wise exam papers during the Christmas holidays, running from 27 December to 2 January. The papers have been written by SimpleStudy’s in-house content team and tailored to different exam boards.

During this period, every student will receive a 24-hour window to sit a timed online exam on a mobile phone or computer. The experience will feel like a real exam, with time limits and interactive questions.

SimpleStudy says this will mark the first time large-scale mock exams have taken place entirely outside school settings. Students will not need teachers, invigilators, or physical exam halls to take part.

Phillip McKenna, co-founder of SimpleStudy, said the initiative aims to give students a realistic exam feel while reducing fear around formal tests. He said the shared experience of sitting exams at the same time across two countries will help students build confidence and feel less anxious.

On 6 January, all participating students will receive their results. These will include grades for each subject, a full mark breakdown, question-by-question explanations, and personalised study advice based on performance.

McKenna said the company expects the results day to become a key moment for students, similar to the excitement and nerves of real exam day. He added that the app will also give instant feedback after each exam so that students can quickly see their strengths and areas for improvement.

The company believes this approach will keep students motivated during the holidays, show them their progress clearly and help them prepare better for their GCSE and A-Level exams.
